modest is hottest

“I find the whole concept of being ‘sexy’ embarrassing and confusing. If I do an interview with photographs people desperately want to change me – dye my hair blonder, pluck my eyebrows, give me a fringe. Then there’s the choice of clothes. I know everyone wants a picture of me in a mini-skirt. But that’s not me. I feel uncomfortable. I’d never go out in a mini-skirt. It’s nothing to do with protecting the Hermione image. I wouldn’t do that. Personally, I don’t actually think it’s even that sexy. What’s sexy about saying, ‘I’m here with my boobs out and a short skirt, have a look at everything I’ve got?’ My idea of sexy is that less is more. The less you reveal the more people can wonder.” – Emma Watson

Spied via pinterest but I don’t know where it was first blogged.

That’s a sweet, fairly self-aware, and very young-sounding quote. Happy to see someone in the movies made it to (checking Wikipedia) 21 without getting too lost and confused, though.

Of course, the people trying to change her clothes and makeup, etc., are trying to create images to sell, rather than help her project an image that satisfies her. Their experience selling magazines gives them a fair amount of data with which to quantify “sexy” in a way that’s useful to them.

Anyway, here am I seizing upon some sentence a kid said in one interview and imagining that defines the entirety of her thoughts on the matter. I’m aware of this, which is why I stop short of using the word “naive.” I won’t assume she is, and I wish her success in controlling her own self-image and public image as she moves forward.

Mike: that’s a pretty dress, and in the context, it’s pretty modest in the chest area. Try getting out of a car in a dress sometime with paparazzi trying to get a peek at yer knickers.

Wish I could ever have pulled off a short haircut like that.
